Coral is made of skeletal remains of marine animals called coral polyps. These tine creatures live in colonies which from branching structures as they grow, eventually forming coral reefs and atolls. the surface of these coral "branches" has a distinctive patterning made by the original skeleton - either striped or like wood grain. Most corals -

red, pink, white and blue varieties - are made of calcium carbonate, black and golden corals are made of a horn like substance called conchiolin. Red coral is the most valuable, and has been used in jewelry for thousands of years.

Dull as first, all coral has a vitreous luster when polished, but is sensitive to heat and acids and may fade with wear. Coral may be imitated by porcelain, stained bone, glass, plastic or rubber and gypsum mixtures.

Occurrence:
Most precious coral is found in warm waters. Japanese coral is red, pink, or white. Red and pink coral is also found on the Mediterranean and African coasts, the red sea and the waters off Malaysia and Japan.

Black and golden coral is found off the coasts of the west Indies, Australia, and the Pacific islands.

Remark:
Coral has been associated with the protection of children, and parents may still give a gift of coral to there young children.

Metaphysical:

Coral comes from the sea and was at one time a home for some marine life. Red Coral is good for helping to "tame" the wildness within. Such as tempers, rages, compulsive disorders. Helps to balance us to the spiritual. A good stimulant for the root chakra. Protects one from depression and despondency.

A good stone to strengthen the bone structure. Does well with mending broken bones. It carries the sun's energy, and does very well with the turquoise. They each carry the energy of moon and sun, and are both balanced in silver settings.

Any type of cleansing does well for the red coral, salt water being preferred, but you should also take into consideration the other stone it has been matched up with. The turquoise does well in water cleansing as well. Both the turquoise and the red coral do well in silver metals.
